How To: Use Your ScanMe 'Status' & 'About' Text

ScanMe offers users the ability to set both a “status” and also some more detailed, static, information about themselves in the “About” section of the Scan Page. Some users have contacted us unsure of the role of each text box - so we just wanted to make sure it was really clear!

You should think of your ScanMe Status box like your Status Update on Facebook, or a tweet that you would post on Twitter. In fact, you can link this status box to either Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn, so when you update your status on Facebook, or post an update on LinkedIn or Twitter, this box will always automatically be up to date!

If you would like to keep your ScanMe status update separate from your other social networks, this is also really easy thought the Status tab of your Scan Page controls.

The “About” section on your Scan Page is for static information, or information that doesn’t change regularly - this could be instructions about what you would like people to do when they scan your QR code, or you can see on the example above, I have used it to tell people where I work and what I do.

So, to get the most out of ScanMe, make sure that both your Status and About text is up to date! Happy Scanning!

Control, Connect & Track With ScanMe

We are always listening to our users, and looking for ways to improve the ScanMe experience. A main feature that many of our users were looking for was a was a way to know when their ScanMe code was scanned, as well as the ability to distinguish whether it was a ScanMe t-shirt, email signature, avatar or business card that was scanned.

So, we listened and we have responded with a detailed column in each user’s Scan History showing “what” has been scanned. For items purchased or created through ScanMe, for example a t-shirt or an email signature, this will show up as the specific item that has been scanned – through the unique use of our product recognition technology.

Due to this product recognition technology, when scanning activity involving a ScanMe product appears on the homepage the product that has been scanned will appear alongside the scan data.

To enable our users to see when they were scanned, we are also ‘time-tagging’ the scan posts as they appear on the ScanMe homepage. This means that alongside who has been scanned, and what has been scanned, we will also show how long ago the scan happened.

We are continually adapting ScanMe to enhance your user experience; so if you have a suggestion or request then just leave a comment, or send us an email!

When you log in to the ScanMe website you’ll notice that we’ve made some changes; these are all designed to make it easier than ever for you to use ScanMe.

Now, you can see quickly how many ScanMe connections you have, and how many times your ScanMe barcode has been scanned. If you see something and you don’t know quite what it means, we’ve added the ‘i’ symbols – simply hover over these and there’s a simple explanation of the item!

Your new ScanMe dashboard also gives you instant access to your Scan Page, which makes it easier than ever to control what people see when they scan your ScanMe barcode. You can also go directly to your ScanMe history, shop, or the ScanMe leaderboard from this brand new dashboard.

When you log in to ScanMe on your desktop computer your brand new ScanMe dashboard is the place to manage your ScanMe barcode, and keep track of who is scanning you and what they are scanning!

ScanMe is social – and with new releases happening all the time we want to get you, our users, involved. So far we’ve had Facebook fans design up t-shirts, users make videos and now we want your pictures.

ScanMe Goes Social...

Life is social. More so now than ever, what we do, where we are and whom we are with are deemed as events to share with our friends. We post what we’re doing as our Facebook status, we tag posts with where we are and who we are with and we use location services to let people know where we are tweeting from.

So, we thought, what about if someone scans you ScanMe code - how can you share this with your friends? And being the social people that we are we thought we’d better make it easy for you!

That is why we developed a way for you to share your scans and connections in one click, straight from our homepage. Our new release of the ScanMe homepage sees a small “share” icon next to your status. This button allows you to post that scan to your Twitter feed or Facebook page, sharing your connection with your friends and followers whilst at the same time increasing your scan points if they then choose to scan your ScanMe barcode!

We will be releasing new features over the coming weeks to make ScanMe more social, so keep up to date with us by liking our Facebook Page or following us on Twitter! And don’t forget to say hi – we love hearing from you!

14 Million Americans Scanned QR Codes in June 2011

Digital World specialists, comScor, Inc released a study on mobile QR code scanning earlier this week: with some interesting revelations. This study found that, in June 2011 alone, 14 million mobile users in the U.S (that is 6.2% of the total mobile audience) scanned a QR Code using their mobile device.

The demographic study of those who scanned QR Codes using their mobile devices showed that the mobile user who scanned a QR Code was more likely to be male and between 18-34.

This is a great leap forward in the world of QR Codes, showing that the technology is becoming an increasingly popular phenomenon, with a growing audience choosing to scan QR codes with their Smartphones. At ScanMe we had already noticed a growing number of our users codes being scanned and this latest study confirms an ever-growing user base for QR Code technology.

How To: Add A Custom Link To Your Scan Page

One question that we’re commonly asked by ScanMe users is how they can connect their scan page to their Facebook Business Page, or to their own website. It’s really simple, so here’s how you do it!

From there click on the “Custom” tab and enter what you would like the “Custom Link” button to say, and the URL you would like it to link to.

The text will appear on the custom button at the bottom of your scan page and will link to the URL you have entered. Easy!

A New Reality Dawns With QR Codes

“Augmented Reality” is a term that is being used more and more as technology advances. But, QR Codes have been giving people the opportunity to experience augmented reality for years; they just haven’t realised it.

In 2008 Pepsi ran a marketing campaign during which they placed QR Codes on roughly 400 million cans and bottles of their soft drinks. These QR Codes then directed the scanner to an internet site where they would find games, competitions and ringtones. This campaign was viewed as unsuccessful; not because of the technology of QR Codes, but because people didn’t know what to do with these funny little black and white squares!

But with QR Codes appearing everywhere from magazines and national TV through to the clothing we wear, and with Smartphone usage increasing dramatically, people are considerably more savvy to QR Codes than back in 2008. Scanning apps are now free to download and some phones come with them pre-installed; this shows it really is time for QR Codes to pave the way for a new way of reality.

The BBC Brings QR Codes To The Nation

The BBC has made a unique move of including QR Codes in its new cookery programme ‘The Good Cook’. ‘The Good Cook’ is a cookery series featuring award-winning food writer Simon Hopkinson. Broadcast on Wednesdays at 7.30pm, this will be many people’s first introduction to QR Codes.

But, how are the BBC using QR Codes in ‘The Good Cook’? The answer is simple, and solves a problem for eager cooks hastily trying to jot down ingredients at the end of each recipe – the QR Code links to a mobile page featuring the recipe, cooking method and tips for the dish just shown. Furthermore, the BBC has created an online binder that allows users to save the recipe to an online collection of dishes from the show.

For cookery programme lovers and keen cooks, this step in to the world of QR Codes will be eye-opening for many, but also a great time saver – wit no need to look up recipes online or try to find a pen and paper! We think it’s a really great idea!

Heads or QR Code?!

QR Codes really have been popping up everywhere - from street art to awards ceremony dresses – but now the Royal Dutch Mint have introduced a limited edition coin featuring a QR Code! These QR Coded coins are being pressed to commemorate the 100^th anniversary of the Royal Dutch Mint in Utrecht.

These coins, the largest of which measures 33mm in diameter, all contain a QR Code on the reverse of the coin – imagine tossing a coin to make a decision and calling “Heads or QR”!!

These tiny QR Codes currently link to the website of the Royal Dutch Mint, although the possibilities of where these could link to are limitless. There would be no better way to spread the word about a promotion than by having a QR Code linking to a promotion on coins in circulation!

We are slightly dubious about how easy it will be to scan these coins, as the QR Codes really are tiny, but we still love the idea and it means the coins really capture the current climate, which is exactly what is needed for a commemorative coin. We love it!
